The Marsanne Region Community of Communes (CCPM) was formed in December 1992 to carry out tasks delegated to it by its member communes. (A commune is the smallest administrative unit in France, headed by a maire (mayor) and a conseil municipal (municipal council). Each village, town or city is a commune and there are around 36,000 of them.)
The CCPM covers an agricultural plain next to the Rhone valley. Among the 10 member villages with their scattered population, a network of small roads leads from the river Roubion to the Ancelle via wooded riverside routes or through fields and copses.
Solidly built stone farmhouses are dotted across the plain. Their triangular gables, edged with “génoises” – rounded tiles in two, three or even four layers – have echoes of Greek temples. Local tradition asserted that the more layers you had, the richer you were.
Enthusiasts for old stonework should make a point of visiting the romanesque churches, at the centre of villages or perched on promontories.
Lavender, sunflowers, rapeseed, tomatoes, vines, garlic, maize, wheat and fruit trees all add to the diversity of the land. Production of cereal seed is also one of the Marsanne plain's specialities.
