To get a clear view of the layout of Cléon d'Andran, it's best to see it from the air. The photograph above shows how the village has grown in concentric circles, like an onion.
At the heart of the village, the oldest houses surround the church, whose bell-tower is a landmark easily seen from the plain.
The second circle, now marked by a narrow street, was formerly a small canal.
At the start of the 19th century the outer ring coincided with the ramparts, which have become a circular boulevard. The houses in this last circle all had small gardens fanning out towards the plain but in the course of time other buildings appeared to take their place.
To get a taste of the old stonework, it's best to walk at a snail's pace. If you go into the church, which is generally open during the day, don't miss on the right of the nave two carved stones set in the wall.
A local organisation, Les Amis du Patrimoine (Friends of the Heritage), aims to preserve and promote these relics of the past.
Because of its central position at the intersection of six main roads across the plain, many travellers pass by and as a result Cléon has numerous shops and services.
