On reaching Saint Gervais, the eye takes in the village's striking silhouette encircling a hill that overlooks the wild course of the river Roubion. Stones from the river-bed form the walls of the houses.
To grasp the layout of the village, imagine the shape of a spoon: the rounded part that goes in the mouth marks the spot most worth visiting. But the visitor should park at the end of the “spoon's handle”. This is a square, wider at one end, with a small construction on the right which at first looks like an oriental pavilion. In fact, this is a fountain, much appreciated by touring cyclists.
Then walk towards the north, passing the Town Hall (mairie), and pausing to admire an elegant fountain on the left. Next, on the right, is the facade of the chateau, whose oldest part includes huge 16th century mullioned windows. As you reach the end of the square, a wide panorama over the Marsanne plain can be seen from the top of the ramparts.
Between the chateau and the 13th century church, a narrow passage leads to the oldest part of the village. Following the narrow streets at random, you may come upon a small square which is dominated by a hundred-year-old mulberry tree.
Several walks have been established around the village, leading to the river bank and also passing in front of the wine cellars of Coteaux de la Valdaine, where wine enthusiasts can taste the products (“vins de pays”) of Drôme or Grignan.
