The gently sloping roof of Saint Marcel's bell-tower is roughly at the same angle as the slopes of the Trois Becs in the distance, suggesting that the 12th century Cluny Benedictine monks may have been inspired by the landscape.
But the monks were not just thinkers. They erected a building regarded today as the most notable romanesque church in the Marsanne region, so much so that since 1846 it has been listed as a historic monument.
The Clunisians gradually linked up their neighbouring property and the present boundaries of the village mirror those of the 10th century estate.
The old village naturally sprang up around the priory. The old houses line up neatly around the church square, which is reached by passing beneath an imposing porch.
The streets are narrow so it's best to see the village on foot. At the first crossroad is a communal wash-house, opposite which is a water fountain representing the face of the Roman god Bacchus, with the water coming from his mouth.
